A cold shrink end cap seals the open end of a cable with no flame, no heat gun, no tools. It is a rubber cap, closed at one end and pre-stretched onto a removable core, that you slide over a cut cable end and shrink into a watertight seal. If you have left a cut cable exposed to rain or soil during a phased install, you know why it exists. This guide covers what it is, when to use one, and the 5-step install.

What a Cold Shrink End Cap Is — and Where It Goes

Unlike a cold shrink tube, which bridges a joint, an end cap caps a single open end — closed into a dome, open at the other, wrapping the cut face and a length of jacket. You see them wherever a cable end is left exposed:
  • Cut cables on site waiting for the next phase of work
  • Spare cable on reels stored outdoors
  • Abandoned or terminated runs that must stay dry
  • Temporary seals during commissioning, before the final connector goes on
Left unsealed, that cut face draws moisture up the conductor and corrodes the copper.

Why Cold Shrink, Not Tape or Heat Shrink

Tape unravels and heat shrink needs a flame near possibly energized gear. A cold shrink end cap installs at room temperature, conforms to the cut face and armor, and needs no power on site. One cap, one pull, done.

How to Install a Cold Shrink End Cap (5 Steps)

  1. Clean & dry the cable end — wipe the jacket and clear debris from the cut face.
  2. Slide the cap on open-mouth first, dome pointing toward the cable tip.
  3. Position so the dome fully covers the cut face with margin and the skirt overlaps ≥50 mm of jacket.
  4. Pull the support core out steadily from the open end while holding the cap in place.
  5. Inspect — the dome hugs the cut face and the skirt grips the jacket with no daylight. A gap means wrong size.
Under a minute per end after a short learning curve.

Sizing and Common Mistakes

Pick the cap like a tube: expanded ID must clear the cable OD (and any armor or connector at the end); recovered ID must grip the jacket OD. Watch the two frequent errors:
  • Dome facing the wrong way — it must point at the cable end, not back down the run.
  • Skirt too short — cover enough jacket or the cap creeps and lifts.

VOLSUN Product Match

VOLSUN makes end caps in the same rubbers as its tubes:
  • EPDM end caps — tough, chemical-resistant, for general power and comms cable ends.
  • Silicone end caps — wider temperature range, mastic-lined option for wet sites, IP68 on a qualified assembly.
  • Custom sizes — matched to your cable OD and armor on request.

Cap every cut cable end the day you make the cut. A cold shrink end cap takes under a minute, needs no heat, and protects the conductor until the final termination. Send VOLSUN your cable OD for a matched size or a custom cap.
